Well, they say there’s a first for everything, and this was certainly my first time photographing triplets! When I got the call from their mom, I was so excited at the prospect of getting to photograph newborn triplets. I mean, lets face it…twins are super fun, and not all that common, but triplets..you just don’t come across that every day!
These little cuties were 3 weeks old when I did their session. Their mama had no bedrest, and each baby weighed between 5-6 lbs at birth! That is AMAZING to me! I felt huge and miserable with each of my SINGLE pregnancies towards the end..I can’t imagine adding 2 more babies to that!
Aside from taking quick breaks to eat, the babies slept the entire time, and didn’t make a peep. The little girl LOVED being next to her brothers. She actually seemed more calm when she was next to her brothers than she did when she was alone. It was so fun for me to get to see how different their little personalities were from each other even so young. They also all knew their mama’s voice and loved anytime they were near her. I always love seeing how deep that bond is between mothers and their babies.
What to expect for a multiples session
A typical, single newborn session, will usually last anywhere from 2-3 hours. For multiples, I generally plan on an extra hour, at least. The nice thing about multiples, is that they are used to being messed with, since they weren’t in the womb alone. They aren’t nearly as sensitive to being moved or touched when sleeping as single birth babies can be. Other than it taking a little longer, sessions for multiples are generally the same as single birth sessions. I’ve found that I like to start out with a group picture first, and then when repositioning to a different pose, I will usually try to get an individual shot of each baby, before moving to the next pose. This session I was definitely winging it a bit since I hadn’t photographed triplets before, but we all survived it and I am so happy with how these pictures came out.
