Traveling Mini Sessions

Since I moved to Georgia from Virginia, every now and then, I do traveling mini sessions.  It honestly wasn’t anything that was on my radar until a friend was mentioning that she’s love for me to come to town to do her family photos. After realizing there were enough people interested to make it worth buying a plane ticket, I did just that.  I was in Virginia Fri-Sun, and booked over 15 mini sessions for the weekend.  It was so much fun to see and catch up with my friends.

In the past, mini sessions make me a little uneasy because some kids need more than 20 minutes to warm up to new people.  I wasn’t as concerned about these since I only offered these sessions to people I already knew.  Mabby (the mom in this adorable family) and I met through a mutual friend when my oldest was about 2. We also both became interested in photography at about the same time.  We also, now both have 4 kids.  She appreciates that not everyone knows what to do with the kind of fun (ahem, chaos) that a family with 4 kids under 9 years old can bring to a photo session.  However, since I myself have 4 kids under 9 years old, I get it!

How to work with larger families

I think the real key to working with larger families is realizing that you, as a photographer, aren’t able to control children, or their personalities. The oldest child, the only boy, in this family, was super easy. The baby, super easy as well.  In my family, the easy kids are numbers 1 and 3:).  On the flip side, my family, as well as this one, has more than 1 spunky kid.  Some people like to call them strong willed!  My point is, I can’t control the situation, and I can’t control any child’s behavior.  What I can control, is how I interact with children. Keeping the session light hearted and stress free is one of my strong suits. I thoroughly enjoy what I do, and I truly believe it shows at my sessions.  I hope you’ll consider me for your family session.  It would be my honor to help you capture your crazy family too!
